Colour in your Environment: Orange

The colour orange helps you be in balance and more comfortable with who you are.

It is associated with the second chakra, which governs the digestive system, reproductive organs and sexuality. Orange is outgoing and expansive. It is about how you see yourself in relation to others — how you communicate, relate and socialize. It is also a great colour for lifting depression. I have read that dancers are attracted to the colour orange because of its joyful and creative qualities. Some of the physical and emotional effects of orange are:

  • stimulates the appetite
  • promotes good digestion
  • stimulates the immune system
  • raises the pulse rate, but not blood pressure
  • eases stomach cramps
  • is cheerful and optimistic
  • helps you be more creative

When I was a kid I went through a period where anything I ate that was orange – a actual orange, or things orange-coloured like an orange popsicle, gave me a stomach ache (so much for easing stomach cramps). It even happened with foods that had no relationship to the flavour - such as cheddar cheese. I might have become sensitive to an orange colourant and by association anything that was orange upset me. They must have changed the dye used because the problem went away.

In clothing it seems to me that people either look fantastic or dreadful in orange.  I fall into the latter category. I tend to be attracted to the peach/pink side of orange, and then only in the summer. My best red is actually an orange-red, a particular shade of coral that is not easy to find. I always feel great when I wear that particular shade.

In your home or workplace, orange is a good choice for any area you want to encourage liveliness and socializing. It also tends to warm a room up and make it look cozier and more intimate. It is a good choice for areas used for entertaining such as the living room, dining room and sometimes the family room. Choose pure orange or any of the shades: peach, coral, salmon, apricot or rust.
