Water is the basis of life and is also important energetically in feng shui gardens. In ancient China water was important for irrigating crops. Emperors used water dragon formulas to ensure the correct placement of water for prosperity. Water can be used to hold energy and to move it around a site.

Still water is yin and is best suited to areas used for relaxing. Moving water is yang and is linked with abundance. Moving water should flow towards the house so that its residents can benefit. All water features should be kept clean to maintain positive energy. A pond which has a balance of aquatic plants and fish should be free of algae. A fountain without wildlife can be kept clean with a pump and filtration system. Clorine free bleach granules can be used occasionally to control algae.

Water is best suited to the career, family and prosperity areas of the bagua. Moving water is an excellent enhancement for the prosperity area of the bagua. In the family gua a cosy area with garden furniture and gently flowing water is a soothing place for family to sit together. A pond in the career gua is calming and acts as a focal point for meditating on your life path.

A little water goes a long way. Ensure that water features are not too large close to the house or the energy can be draining. A bowl of fresh water with floating flowers is a fitting enhancement for a balcony garden. Enjoy the peace and prosperity of water in your garden.
