In some ancient traditions, the beginning of August marked the First Harvest or “the festival of first fruits” (in the Celtic lands it was called Lughnasadh or Lammas). It is a time of plenty, as grains and fruits ripen. The first of many harvesting activities begins. And, the Earth Mother is celebrated for her generous and abundant gifts.
We all have a deep, innate connection to the seasons and cycles of the year and it is food for the soul to honor the energy of these transitions and the traditions associated with them – especially those that connect us to our ancestors, cultural roots or family history.
One way to celebrate this season is by creating an Abundance Altar piled high with bowls of grain, trays of fruit and rich decoration. Show your love and appreciation for the Earth by doing something healthy for the environment, like recycling or composting. Or perhaps invite friends together for a rich, festive meal using fresh produce from a local farmers market.
In my own life, I also use this part of the year to look at my own personal harvest. What seeds did I plant in the spring of the year? What projects are coming to fruition? Are those projects and plans manifesting in the way I envisioned? Is there anything I need to release, prune, cut away or prioritize so that my harvest is more abundant?
In this season of First Harvest, take time to thank our Mother Earth. Celebrate your many blessings and accomplishments. And honor all that is abundant in your life!
