Opening the Door for Your Intuition by Deb SwingholmUse your intuition.”

I say this often when talking with clients about Feng Shui and creating Sacred Space.  But, what does it mean, exactly?  And, where do you start?

Applying your intuition to create Sacred Space can be as simple as noticing the way a color, fabric, photo or piece of furniture makes you feel.   Do you feel happier?  Uplifted?  Or, does it make you feel tired and sluggish?  Are you more relaxed?  Does the item remind you of something unpleasant?  Or, does it offer inspiration?  Choose items for your home that raise your energy and touch your heart in some way.  Let go of those things that bring you down.  This is your intuition at work.

Activate your intuition even more by stimulating your senses – sight, smell, hearing and touch.

Natural lavender soap.  Fresh herbs.  Bright fruits and vegetables.  Sweet sounding wind chimes.  Colorful and richly textured fabrics.  Plush blankets and thick towels.  All these things engage your senses.

Intuition lies in the space between the five senses.  It lives at the edge, just beyond your immediate perception.  Heightening your sensory awareness opens the door for intuitive discovery, insights and messages.

How do you develop your intuition further?   And put it to work in your daily life?

First, consider how intuitive information arrives.   I believe everyone has a basic “Intuitive Style” – one primary way that we receive intuitive information.  Some people access more than one style.  Here are just a few examples:

“Feeling” (Clairsentience)
Sensations in your body act as a signal.  The sensations can be in your solar plexus, hands, chest or the back of your neck.  You may notice a tingling, a tug, warmth or tightening.  This style can be very responsive to the emotions and thoughts of others.

“Knowing” (Claircognizance)
You have an instant, clear awareness about someone or something.  This might be a strong sense that someone is telling the truth or where a lost object can be found.

“Hearing” (Clairaudience)
Like a calm voice whispering in your ear, you hear succinct messages or instructions.  Insights arrive like a song on the radio.

“Seeing” (Clairvoyance)
You receive information as an image in your mind – a color, a symbol, a person, or the outcome of a situation.  This may happen in a meditative state, in a dream or as you gaze at a person or object.

Which of these styles do you recognize in yourself?

The next step is acting on intuitive information.  Start small.  This might be choosing a paint color for your bedroom.  Or, deciding what to wear to an important meeting.  It could mean following a sudden impulse to take a new route to work.  At other times, your intuitive senses can warn you of danger, alert you to a health concern or keep you focused and vigilant in a difficult situation.

As you gain more confidence in using your intuition, I suggest keeping an “Intuition Journal”.  Keep this handy as a place to note how an intuitive message arrives.  Write about how (or if) you acted on it, and the result.  Also, notice if there is a particular place that seems to activate your intuition, or a specific time of day when you are most aware.

With practice you will come to know what is reliable, which sensations or feelings have meaning.  You’ll understand the messages that come as symbols or colors.  You’ll become familiar with the subtleties of your main intuitive style.  Over time, you will know what to pay attention to, what to trust.  It is a process of distinguishing.

In your home, at work, and in your creative life – intuition can be your constant, guiding companion.   When you recognize it and use it, your intuitive ability will serve you well, in positive and unexpected ways.

  • I find that using intuition to create Sacred Space in the home is very powerful, in fact I rarely use traditional feng shui enhancements and rely on what intuitively feels right both for myself and recommending this for clients. And I also find my needs change with the seasons. Great article, thanks for sharing it.

Thanks, Deborah. You mention how your needs change with the seasons – I find that to be true as well. I also notice where I am on the planet makes a difference. My location largely influences what I want/need from my spaces, and a particular location can drastically change the way my intuition functions, too. Intuitive information arrives very differently when I am in Asia than in the USA.
